Xubuntu comes with a variety of software for performing office tasks such as word processing and publishing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Several office suites are available with Xubuntu. An office suite is a collection of office applications which can be used together to accomplish a variety of tasks.

<application>GNOME Office</application> is installed by default. The applications in this suite are generally lighter and faster than the programs in the <application>OpenOffice.org suite</application>, and have fewer features as a result. But this may be exactly what you want. The suite has excellent compatibility with other major Office suites, such as <application>Microsoft Office</application>.

<application>Openoffice.org</application> is an optional office suite, with an emphasis on simplicity and ease of use.

Although the GNOME Office suite includes a broad range of desktop software, only a subset of these applications are installed in Xubuntu by default. The rest of the applications can easily be installed separately using <application>Synaptic</application>. Currently <application>Abiword</application>, <application>Gnumeric</application> and <application>The GIMP</application> are installed by default in Xubuntu. To use the other applications you will need to install them manually (see <ulink type="add-applications" url="ghelp:add-applications">add applications</ulink>).

The following packages from the <quote>Universe</quote> repository are part of the <application>GNOME Office</application> suite (see <ulink type="add-applications" url="ghelp:add-applications">add applications</ulink>). You may choose to install all of them for the full office suite, or choose only the ones you need.

A collection of document templates are available within the <application>Abiword</application> application. To access the templates, perform the following actions:

If you have sent a document to someone but they are unable to open the document, it is likely that they are using Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office cannot currently open documents created in the default GNOME Office format.
