<acronym>DHCP</acronym> (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a networking protocol that allows your system to obtain an <acronym>IP</acronym> (Internet Protocol) address, gateway address, netmask, as well as <acronym>DNS</acronym> (Domain Name System) addresses.
